flowers

Stole this from Your Friend from Florida, I had another about books, I was going to do, but most of the books I read are non fiction, and it was definitely a fiction book questionnaire.

1. Are flowers a nice gift to give someone?  I like flowers. I feel special when someone gives them to me. I hope people feel special when I give them to them.
2. Do you wear any jewelry? I try to coordinate my earrings to my shirts for work. I just got a fit bit for Christmas, if you want to call that jewelry.
3. Have you ever laid in a field of flowers? Not that I recall.
4. Do you like tea? I'm getting there.
5. What would you do with a million dollars? Buy things, probably put some in a retirement account.
6. What word do you have trouble typing? Chocolate
7. Favorite fairytale? The Little Mermaid
8. Do you sleep with stuffed animals? yes
9. Do you prefer the city or the country? country
10. Are you a big fan of makeup? I don't do makeup, sometimes I do a little foundation
11. Favorite drink? Mountain Dew
12. What’s the longest amount of time you’ve stayed awake? Probably back in college, when I pulled an all-nighter. Or there was this one time, I went on a police ride-along until about 3 in the morning
13. Have you ever traveled outside of your country? Nope
14. Do you like spring? yep
15. Lipstick or lipgloss? neither
16. Favorite color? green

20. Does your zodiac sign fit your personality? I'm a cancer and I like water. Other than that I don't know
21.Favorite sea animal? octopuses, jellyfish or mermaids

Bother

Saw these on Your Friend from Florida's blog, thought it'd be fun to answer them:
What did you do last year that you had not done before?  I went to St. Louis, that was an interesting adventure.
Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions/goals for the year and will you make/set more for next year?  What are they? What are your new ones?  I'm not sure I made any last year. I don't really do resolutions.
Did anyone you know give birth?  No. Or become pregnant? No. Or adopt? No.
Did anyone you know die? No. Or have a serious illness/injury? No.
What places have you visited? Like I said, I went to St. Louis.
Any new pets? Lost a pet? No pets here.
What would you like to have next year that you lacked this year (doesn't have to be a physical thing i.e. love, job security, peace of mind...)? More money, yes more sanity, less weight
What date from last year will remain etched in your memory and why? Can't think of anything.
What was your biggest achievement last year? Nothing big happened.
Did you get sick or injured? Nope, didn't even have my yearly cold (Knock on wood)
What was the best thing you bought? Minions
Where did most of your disposable income go (money left over after you pay for food, medical care, basic clothing, transportation, and shelter)? postage and just buying stuff for swaps
What song will always remind you of last year?  Doesn't have to be a song released last year. I listened to Hallelujah by Pentatonix a lot, and I discovered Thunderstruck by AC/DC on Youtube.
What do you wish you would have done more of? Hanging out with friends
What do you wish you would have done less of? watching Youtube/movies and being on the computer
What was your favorite new TV program? Movie? Album/Songs? Or if you didn't pick up any new ones, what are you still watching/listening to? Any recommendations? I don't really pay attention to new stuff.
What was the best book you read this year?  How many did you read? I really liked the Radium Girls by Kate Moore and The Library Book by Susan Orlean. I'm currently at 86, I'm hoping to hit 100 by the end of the year.
What did you do on your birthday and how old were you? Did you feel differently? I turned 35, we were in St. Louis, so that was fun-ish. I didn't like that I didn't get anything for my birthday, it seemed like people forgot because I wasn't around (I'm still a little bitter).
What political or social issue stirred you the most? I try not to talk about politics, though the elections were interesting.
Who was the most interesting new person you met? We hired 3 new people in my department at work, they're pretty interesting.
What changed at your job? I believe I've gotten more Interlibrary loan responsibilities, but I'm not sure if that's just a this past year thing.
What changed in your home? I got more stuff, cause I spend too much money.
Describe how a relationship changed. One of my closest friends moved to another state.
Do you think you are still the same person that you were at the beginning of the year?  How so? Probably not, I think we all change every minute we're alive.
Summarize the year in three words or less. Bonus points for doing it in one word. Explain. Not exciting. Does that really need explanation?
How have people around you changed? Please refer to that other question about change
What have you learned throughout the year? (Other than crafts) Things about people that I'm not gonna talk about
What was your favorite outfit for warm weather? Cooler weather? I like jeans, t-shirts and flip flops. The only thing that changes for winter, would be a switch to boots.
Did you learn any new crafts or techniques? I did learn a few new techniques, such as making a shaker with tulle, like this tag:
I also learned how to marble paper:
What was your favorite thing you made?  Sorry, can't pick just one, but here's a few: I really enjoyed this explosion box:
This set of tags:
 This altered picture frame:
 This ATC:
 This altered notebook:
 This tag:
 This pocket letter:
 And this journal page:
What changed about your physical appearance? I cut my hair in April, cut off over 15 inches. Now, I just wish it were long enough for a braid again.
What are your hopes and dreams for the new year?  To get my parents off my back. I don't really have a lot, because if you hope for things and they don't happen, then you're just bummed. I seem to be bummed a lot lately, I'd like to be less bummed.
I do like filling these out, even though my life is boring.

Christmas questions

I was watching Amy's Got a Gluegun on YouTube, and she answered these questions and I thought it would be fun to do the same, so here goes:
1. What is your décor style? I collect snowmen and snowy stuff, so that's basically my style
I've scaled down a bit since I moved and don't have near as many as I used to, but here are my decorations:
The tree is one of those ceramic ones that have holes cut out with plastic pieces and you put a lightbulb under it. I stopped putting the base on a couple years ago, because mine is vintage and I was a little worried about the wires. The cards hanging on it are from a swap that was called Merry Moos from a Yahoo! group, basically we created these little cards. You can see my patriotic snowman and my policeman snowman. I also love the cute couple on the right side.
Traveling around the corner you see this bookshelf:
These are my Iowa State University snowmen. I'm in Ames, IA, which is where Iowa State University is and I also went there and work there. Most of them are snowglobes, but there are a few others there. You can also see the candy mold ornament someone made for me in a button swap, and my cute blue/green ornament. You can also see a guinea pig fabric button book I got in a swap.
Traveling along this wall, you come to this bookshelf:
I love the little black tree I got on after Christmas sales at Borders one year. That snowman on the left also lights up. The one on the right, I call my artist snowman cause he's got a beanie/hat on. On the first shelf you see a Santa, that's actually a nesting doll my parents got me in Alaska one year. You can also see the 'ice cube' snowmen with their peppermint candles.
Going around the corner you come to this bookshelf (have you notice they all match?):
At the top is a music box, right next to my 'real' Christmas tree, it's actually a part of a lilac tree we had to cut out at my old house, I took the bark off and sealed it with a light brown/yellow varnish. You can barely see the blue elephant ornament at the top of it, I collect elephants, though this is probably the only Christmas ornament I have. You can also see I'm still kinda stuck in fall with the ceramic pumpkin and Halloween snowglobe, I got them at the end of fall and didn't have enough time to enjoy them, so I left them out. Most of this bookcase is decorated with ornaments people have made me, quite a few are from button swaps. The little girl in front of the radio on the top, the dress form on the left hanging from the top, The square box in the middle hanging from the top, the stockings hanging from the first shelf, the mitten forms hanging from the first and second shelves. I also have a couple vintage snowmen: the cup on the first shelf, the round one on his feet behind the mitten on the second shelf. I also love the hot air balloon a friend gave me in a swap.
Going along this wall, you come to my TV cabinet:
I love those two in the middle with their glittery hats. I had bought them at a garage sale and their heads were bare. I picked up these hat ornaments at the Dollar Tree. I really like the silver one, I added some tinsel around the outside and a sparkly button on the top. You can also see Christmas Kermit, I collect frogs (less so now), and a few wild animals dressed up for the cold.
Traveling along the wall, you come to my owl tree (this is actually out all year long):
I had top bid for this tree at a local festival of trees event, it had ornaments made out of vintage buttons, it also has a garland made out of vintage mother of pearl buttons. The ornaments came off in the move and haven't made it back to the tree. When I first got it, I referred to it as my Charlie Brown Christmas tree because it looked that sad, so I stuck some owls on it and it has grown from there. I love collecting owls, most of them are Christmas ornaments, but as you can see on the shelves below the tree, I've gotten many others as well. That bowl on the second shelf I actually picked up this year on clearance for $1.50.
And around the corner, you run into my 'bar':
My apartment is very small. I don't really have room for a bar. I do have baking supplies in that cabinet, but I mostly use it to store stuff (as you can see from the kitchen stuff behind the winter decorations). In this picture I have a lot of Christmas gifts waiting to be wrapped, I am happy to say they are all wrapped up and ready to be opened. You can also see my monster, I love monsters.
This window is above my TV, sorry about the darkness, it was night when I took this picture:
These two art pieces were from the local festival of trees, they have a silent art auction at the same time.
2. When do you start decorating? Usually when it starts getting cold. This year it was Black Friday.
3. What are your favorite colors to decorate with? Mostly white
4. Do you change your décor theme every year? No, I add more snowmen, mostly what people give me now, I don't buy a lot anymore.
5. What’s your favorite winter candle? I don't allow myself to have candles. I accidentally left one burning overnight in my old apartment, so I'm not allowed to have them anymore.
6. What’s your favorite thing to decorate with? As you can see from the pictures, snowmen
7. How do you decorate the outside of your home? I live in an apartment, I can't decorate the outside.
8. What’s your favorite room to decorate? Probably the living room because I spend the most time in there.
9. What’s your most meaningful Christmas décor piece? I really like the ceramic Christmas tree. My grandparents had one when I was little, so when I saw this one at a garage sale a few years ago, I scooped it up.
10. Fake or real tree: We never had a real tree when I was growing up because of my mom's allergies. My apartment's have never been big enough for real trees, and I really like my little tiny trees, they are so easy to store and put up.

11. Any Christmas inspirations or tips? No, it used to be I put everything in the same place year after year, so it was fun to find new places for my stuff this year.

Merry Christmas everyone!

What If....

I stole this from Nicole, I love meme's and haven't done one in a loooong time.

What if I were to get pregnant?
I would not be happy, I am not a big fan of kids, and would probably have an abortion.

What if I could have any job in the universe?
I would love to get paid for my artwork.

What if I had the day to myself?
I'd probably just go shopping downtown. I have lots of days (well, not the whole day cause I work, but generally afternoons) to myself, and I have so much fun wandering through stores. I would love to just wander through an antique mall, unfortunately, ours is closing tomorrow.

What if I could get married?
I changed this one (it said all over again, I'm not married), I admit it, I never planned my wedding as a kid. I do love checking out the bridal magazines and looking at the dresses. I think it'd be cool to have a handmade wedding, course I'd have to have a boyfriend first.

What if I could live anywhere in the US?
I'd take Okoboji, IA. I love going there on vacation, unfortunately, I think being there all the time would make it less fun.

What if you could have any talent in the world?
I like the talent I have now, my art.

What if you met me in real life?
I'd love to meet some of my followers in real life. I like to think I don't really hold much back, so hopefully, you'd like me.

What if I went back to school?
I would totally take some of those anthropology classes I wanted to take, and maybe some art ones.

What if money weren't an object?
I wish. I could move to my own house, have a room just for my crafting supplies, have a dog, spend as much as I wanted on crafting supplies and clothing.

What if I could meet one celebrity?
I'm not big on meeting celebrities, but I'd love to meet the guys from Supernatural. Of course, I'd probably just grin and blush and not say anything.

What if I could shop at one store for the rest of my life?
Micheals. Hey, it doesn't say what kind of store. I love going to Micheals, they have so many cool things there. Thankfully, the closest one is 45 minutes away, so I don't get there very often.

What if I could choose any pet?
A dog, totally. I love hanging out with my friend when she brings puppies to town. I'd love to have another guinea pig too, maybe some day. I miss my pig.

What if I could go on a trip right now?
If money still weren't an object, Hawaii. I loved it when we were there a few years ago, I would love to explore more of the islands.

What if I had to choose between a house cleaner and professional chef?
Totally take that cleaner. Only thing is, I can find everything in my messy house. Maybe they could just clean up the bathroom and kitchen. I'm trying to get better at cooking/baking, so that would totally kill that.

What if I had the option to get plastic surgery?
Maybe get some of my fat shaved off, course if I exercised more, I wouldn't need that.

Thursday 5

I thought I'd join the Thursday 5 on Flip Flops and Combat Boots:
Fun
Amazing
Relaxing
Fabulous
Interesting.

1. I had great FUN on Saturday going to the Gilbert city wide garage sales. I got to have a girl's day with my aunts.

2. Saturday afternoon was AMAZING. The weather was in the 60's, the sun was shinning, there was little to no wind. I got my lawn mowed without getting too sweaty, and then my guinea pig and I enjoyed a nice snack on the grass.

3. Today should be pretty RELAXING. All I have to do is my laundry, I'm thinking of doing dishes as well, the sink is overflowing and the water smells kinda funny. I wish the plumbing guy would hurry up and get here so I can start those things.

4. The two dresses I bought yesterday are FABULOUS. I love the green one, it kinda makes me feel like a greek goddess, and I have the cutest sandals to wear with it. The blue one is very cute as well, I realized, while I was looking at it today, it's the same style as the one I wore to my high school graduation.

5. The stores at the outlet center were INTERESTING, other than clothing, they had a couple food stores and a book store. I spent a little more than I planned, but I will enjoy everything I bought.

Well, I hope I did ok. I don't have that great of stuff to write about, I don't have a very exciting life. Next week, I may have more to write about, especially after the weekend I'm looking forward too.

Some thoughts

Are you guys sick of staring at that photo yet? This post is going to be what has happened in my life since my last post, and my thoughts of the new year. Throughout there will be random photos of my favorite garage sale finds of the year, because I know I don't like reading pictureless posts, and figure you all like something to look at as well.
This is a velvet painting that I just loved, my grandparents had one of these when I was growing up.
So, since I cut my finger, life has been pretty normal, I did learn how to shower with a plastic bag around my hand, and then got smart and bought rubber gloves. I had a virus attack my computer. I'm still not entirely sure how it got in, but it definitely came from a website. It was called System Tool, and looked like a virus scan program. It popped up saying I had a bunch of files infected and that I needed to get rid of them. The bad thing is, if I had clicked OK, I would have gotten rid of some very important files on my computer. I knew it was some kind of virus, as I had run my software a few days earlier, and had come up fine. I tried to delete the file, it put an icon on my desktop and in my start menu, as if I had downloaded and installed it. It wouldn't let me run my virus scan software or get into my control panel or task manager, saying they were all corrupted. I finally called DELL, and had them take control of my computer in safe mode. After running a few more virus software, and deleting my temporary internet files, it was gone. That cost me another bunch of money I can't really afford.

Here's my first teacup, starting my collection.

I got my stitches out and my hand is healing nicely. I was told it would take about a month to heal completely. I guarantee I'll have a nice scar. I noticed the other day that when I write (it's on my dominant hand), when I'm laying my hand on the paper or whatever, it kinda feels numb, but the doctor did say I might have cut some nerve endings. I also noticed it's a bit stiff when I bend my pinkie, but I figure that's normal as well. I love vintage handkerchiefs especially with embroidery.
For Christmas, I received quite a few things I had on my list: a new printer, which is also a scanner. A pair of black dress pants for work, 2 pairs of pajamas, some clothes, a hand beater. Next time I bake, it will be much easier. My friend, Loretta, made me a very cute journal. I'm still waiting to see what Kevin got me, I sent him home Wed night, figuring the weather would be much worse than it was on Thurs evening. He went back to work Mon night, and we're planning to have our Christmas sometime soon. It all depends on how his schedule works out, I'm kinda hoping he'll have New Year's Day or Eve off.

I love the bowl, carnival glass, and the glass.
I don't have huge plans for New Year's Eve. Right now my plan is to watch a couple movies with my parents, stay up until just after midnight and go to bed. I'm actually kind of dreading it, because my mother has decided that once again, I'm not doing enough to find another job (after losing one of my more permanent ones in September), and is requiring me to do volunteer work with my time. She's never quite figured out that when it's required or pushed on a person, they really don't want to do it. I guess since I live in their apartment, and don't pay rent (even though I've tried to give them money), I must do something else to their liking. They have this thought, that if they don't know what I'm doing all the time, I must be doing nothing.
Love everything in this photo. The stick pin is cloissone, I love these pieces. I gave the box to my stocking swap partner, more on that in another post. The bracelet was just so cute and dainty, and I've worn the earrings a couple times and gotten a lot of comments on them.
I have a few resolutions for next year, even though I don't really make resolutions. I'm trying to cut back on spending money on stuff I don't need. So, I'm not buying more HotWheels/Matchbox cars for myself, and probably won't be buying more for Kevin just for the heck of it. Or at least I won't be buying more than 2 at a time for him. I figure if it's really cool (meaning a great color scheme, or something he doesn't already have), it's ok, also when you find a good one in Matchbox, you kinda have to buy it, as they don't have cool/new ones out that often.
I'm going to think a lot about my garage sale purchases, and only buy the following for good prices: vintage hankies, preferably with stitching; tiny teacups, doilies, rose items, glass items mostly cups, creamers, and sugar bowls; and game pieces if they're really rare/old looking. I have way too much stuff as it is, and I don't need more. I'm also going to be on the lookout for good gifts, as they will be cheaper.
I'm going to try and not buy more craft supplies, I have a ton I don't use as it is. And it's not something I need more of.
The new schedule for the library starts in 2 weeks and I'm scheduled to work Fridays 1-6pm, so I won't have to worry about going to those garage sales. Though I do plan to be on the lookout for garage sales. I found I love going to them and that extra air of mystery of what might be at them. Also, other than having to be somewhere, I don't have a huge reason not to go, I can always plan not to spend anything.
I love finding creamers and sugar bowls, as well as the teacups.
I'm going to try and get back into walking every day. I have no reason not to, I'm just lazy. I gained more weight than I wanted to last year, and most of it is because I wasn't walking regularly, add that to the fact I lost one of my jobs that's probably about a mile in walking each night.
My favorite piece is the sugar bowl.
I want to join more swaps next year. A lot of the time, I'll join a swap and then back out because I waited until the last minute to make something. I hope that will get my creative juices flowing again.
I'm also planning on listing more stuff on Etsy again. With the amount of garage sales I went to last year, I did buy some stuff that I can list and hopefully sell on there.

I couldn't pass up the hair comb or the tiny teacup.
Here's an end of the year meme:
1. Will you be looking for a new job? Another job, for sure, hopefully something more permanent, I'm getting really sick of places closing that I work at.
2. Will you be looking for a new relationship? I'm hoping to make more friends.
3. New house? Maybe, I hope to not live in this apartment forever.
4. What will you do differently in 2011? Like I said above, spend less, walk more, think more about my purchases.
5. New Year's resolution? Same as above.
6. What will you not be doing in 2011? I don't know, hopefully not helping another store close.
7. Any trips planned? Not at the moment.
8. Wedding plans? No.
9. Major thing on your calendar? My birthday, but that's normal.
10. What can't you wait for? Warm weather, as always. Though so far, we've had a pretty good winter.
11. What would you like to see happen differently? I would like to spend more time with my boyfriend, but unless he gets a different job, that won't happen.
12. What about yourself will you be changing? Like I said, I hope to walk more.
13. What happend in 2010 that you didn't think would ever happen? Didn't think I'd lose another job to a store closing.
14. Will you be nicer to people you care about? I always try.
15. Will you dress differently this year than you did in 2010? Probably not.
16. Will you better your relationship with your family? I think it's a lost cause. I try, and then they just treat me the same, so I don't know if it's worth it.
17. Will you do charity work? Not unless I have to
18. Will you go to bars? I don't like bars.
19. Will you be nice to people you don't know? It's kind of a requirement in my jobs.
20. Do you expect 2011 to be a good year for you? I hope so, I hope I make more money, so I'm not struggling as much, but that's normal.
Love the silver tray and the hankies. Though I believe the hankies were embroidered later in their life. I sent 2 of the pins to my stocking swap partner.
Speaking of spending less money. My friend, Loretta and I went shopping Tuesday, and I didn't spend that much. We started at Target, where I chose not to spend $10.00 on a season of Bones. I did buy a box of Christmas cookies, that I'm almost done with, shouldn't have done that. I didn't go down the car aisle, so I didn't buy any of those. I did buy a Mountain Dew, shouldn't have done that either.
Then we went to Sam's Club, where I didn't buy anything, even though I was hungry and tempted to buy sugary food.
Then we went to Ankeny to Micheal's, where I spent less than $5.00. I did buy another clear stamp, and a plastic block, I bought a stationery set and some cards. Most everything was on sale and I used a 50% off coupon on something that wasn't. I decided not to buy more buttons, and I didn't buy any of the Christmas decorations, even though I wanted to.
Love this sundae cup, especially for the price of free.
I also have a lot more money in my wallet than I usually do. A few of the shirts my mother got me for Christmas didn't fit, so I got cash back for those. And I still have cash from before Christmas, now if I could just hold off on spending it that would be great. Usually when I have cash in my wallet, it gets spent pretty quickly.
Another teacup.
That's all I have on my mind. I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and has a good and safe New Year's. Hopefully I'll post more next year, no promises. Enjoy the rest of the pictures.
This is a compact with 2 mirrors.
A silver bowl.
Another cute glass, this one is pink depression glass.
Some salt cellars. I love the unique items at garage sales.
Another creamer.
The first vintage handkerchief I bought. I sent it to my treasured tin partner.
Some more cute cups.
Wanted to show a couple of the pins I love: the embroidered rose, and the red rose.

One, I don't think I'm buying Levi's jeans again. It used to be I could wear a pair of jeans practically every day and they would last a year or so. In January, I needed some new jeans to wear to one of my jobs, so I bought a pair, there are parts that are already wearing through. That's not acceptable, especially considering I paid about $25-$30 for them.
Another, I bought some bagels at my grocery store last Saturday, I had eaten 2 of them, today I went to eat another, they were moldy. They weren't very expensive, but I would think they should last more than 5 days. They were bakery items instead of trucked in, but still. I had 4 I had to throw away today, it was very disappointing.

ugh

So, I've figured out that my mother thinks I know nothing. I think part of the reason I got my degree in CJ was because my parents didn't know much about it and I could speak my mind and be right, or at least listened to. But my mom always talks down to me, even when we're talking about opinions, there's always a tone about how she says things and she implies that I don't know what I'm talking about.
Like today, she leaves me a note on a container of ice melt not to use it, like I don't know you don't use ice melt on top of snow. It was because we got a 1/8 inch of ice last night, and I sprinkled it with ice melt and some sand. We have a new piece of concrete at the bottom of our driveway, and we're not supposed to use ice melt on it, something about the chemicals reacting with the new concrete.
