Garage sales this week

Alright, went to 5 garage sales, and our library's book sale this weekend.
First sale was about a block away from me, I got canvas boards for $1.00, a book on Iowa for $1.00, the paper punch for $.50, and the mysterious bag for $.75
All I saw in the bag was the lace, but here's what else was in it:

Next sale I went to was a church sale, it was pay whatever you thought was reasonable, I thought $3.00, but just being up there in line, I was persuaded to pay $5.00
I got these activity books, napkins, journal, pencils, and

a box of buttons, the Santa figuring, and the 2 pins.

Next was another garage sale, the Puzzlemania/Mathmania activity books were $.50 each, Guess Who was $2.00. I find it funny how people love to try and sell activity books where all the activities are already done.

I got the bag of stamps for $.50, the cat stamp was $.75, and the stuffed animal was $.05. The stuffed bug, is a doodelbug from Sesame Street, you never see those anymore, so I had to buy it and for only a nickel.

Here are the stamps that were actually in the bag, what sold me was the two frogs, I bought the whole bag for those.

Lastly, I went to the library book sale today, I usually go on Sunday, because it's half price then, but I'm out of town tomorrow.
The Quick and Tasty book was in the special collections for $3.00, and I'm not exactly sure why, the book next to it was in the regular nonfiction section for $1.00, and it's much bigger than the other one.

I also bought these image books for $.50 each.

Garage sale finds today

So, today, I went to a few garage sales on my way home from picking up my ring. I had originally planned to go to 3 garage sales, but as I was on my way to the first one, I ran into 3 others. And then I found another one on the way to my 2nd and 3rd stops. Here's what I found this week:
At one sale, there were a ton of embroidered hankies, but I settled on 2, they were both $1.00 each, the silver plate was also $1.00, and then the 3 flower items were $.75 each, but the man gave me everything for $3.00 even.

These I found at the second sale I went to, the first one was extremely high in prices, I find it interesting the vast selection in prices between sales. It seems some people are trying to get rid of their items, some people are trying to make money, and sometimes I get the vibe that some people were told to get rid of their items, but they figure if the prices are so high, no one will buy items.

Anyway, the hair comb was too cute to pass up for $.10, and the tiny cup was $.25. So, $.35 there.

This I got at the last sale, it was only $.10, I've been trying to rely on my math skills more than calculators lately, but I'm not that good at math, so I keep buying math books at sales. By the time I got to this sale, I only had a $20 bill left, and when I tried to pay, the lady said I could just have it because I didn't want all the change and she didn't want to count it out. I actually did want the change, because I'm trying to pay even amounts of money and save all the change in a piggy bank (and a camel bank, and a ladybug bank). I've been doing this since I started reading Simply Altered last year. It's worked pretty good, I cashed in my change when I went to Hawaii in January, think it was about $200, and again when I went to Okoboji, this past August, there was a little over $100, then.

Back to today, I wasn't about to argue on getting the book free, so nothing spent at that sale.

These are from the 3rd unexpected sale I stumbled over. These 3 items weren't marked, but the one below was marked $.25, the lady said she'd give me everything for $.50. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the cross or the scrolly thing, but the Santa is for my mother, she collects Santas.

This is from that 3rd sale. It was marked $.25, I believe it's a candle holder, I just liked the color.

Garage Salen

So, yesterday, I talked my friend Karli, into hitting a few garage sales. The first one we went to was mostly kids stuff, the 2nd one was mostly antiques, and the woman running it sure liked to price things at $10. I found a bag (gallon size) of buttons, but she wanted $15 for it, that was a little pricey for me. I did find a couple things though:

This tiny little pale pink jar with a brass lip, is about 2 1/4 inches. It was $.75

This little sundae cup(?), is about 3 inches tall was marked free, a perfect price I thought.

This doily is about 8 inches in diameter, it was $.25

So, that was $1.00 at that sale.

The next sale we went to had tons of DVDs and CDs, plus lots of antique items.

I found this jar full of vintage buttons for $.25

The DVD was $3.00

That's $3.25 at that sale.

The next sale we went to wasn't very exciting. Karli had to go home and I had one more sale I wanted to stop at. I had gone to a sale at the same address earlier in the summer and found some very cute jewelry.

This time, I found this horse for $2.00, I had this same horse when I was a kid, unfortunately I played a bit too much with it, and the feet, the stirrups and his ears broke off. I still have the horse, so it's nice to have them both together.

I also found this cute little cherry pin, that's about 2 inches tall for $.25

And this teacup for $.50. It's very cute, there's a flower on one side.

And a flower inside, but apparently I forgot that picture. Anyways, it measures a little over 2.5 inches tall and a little over 4 inches wide including the handle.

So, that was $2.75 at that sale, with a grand total of $7.00 spent on Friday.

Today (or more like yesterday, as I'm having this posted on Sunday), my mom and I hit a couple sales. The first one had a lot of antiques.

I found this cute little cup and saucer for $.75, the cup has 3 tiny feet on the bottom and measures 2 1/4 inches tall and 3 inches wide including the handle. The plate measures about 4 1/4 inches wide. They're souveneirs from New Orleans.

I also found this very tarnished silver bowl for $1.00. Remember this post, where I bought that silver bowl. I was looking at them today, and they are the exact same bowl, only one is really tarnished and one isn't.

I also found these cute items. There's a tobacco coupon for $.25, a metal button with blue gems for $.25, 5 turquoise colored plastic buttons for $.5o, and a little owl pin for $.25

I also found these cute little bouncy balls for Christmas, my mom collects Santas, and I collect snowmen, for $.25

I also found some cute little heart boxes (which I also forgot the picture for) for $.50. And some cookies for $.40 each, I bought 3, they've been eaten.

That's a total of $5.45 for today.

Tomorrow (or more like today, since I'm posting this on Sunday), my mom, aunt and I are going to a local art festival. I'll show what I buy later.

Disappointed

That's how I felt about the 2 garage sales I went to today, one was a 3-family sale, and it seemed to have less than I've seen at single family sales, the 2nd one was held in conjunction with our downtown farmer's market, and they said it was going to be soo big, there were 6 vendors, one of them had prices like they were at an antique store (which is a very different market), and one was obviously jewelry that she had made (which was OK, I was expecting more random finds though)
So, here's what I bought:

A bag of wooden winter pieces for 75 cents.

3 cards with buttons on them for 10 cents each.

2 books, Personal Hygiene written in 1913 and a Teachers Manual on How to Keep Order written in 1893. The personal hygiene book was $1.00, and the teachers manual was 10 cents.

Everything but the bingo cards are from the 2nd sale. I also bought 2 loaves of bread, which are great tasting.

This month (Sept) is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and quite a few of the stores in our downtown district are giving deals to anyone who shows their library card. One of these stores was supposed to be the farmer's market, but when I showed mine, no one had any idea what it was for. That really turned me off in going back to them, they don't have that great of selection, but they obviously signed up to promote this, and then apparently forgot, one of the ladies even said, it could have been the other farmer's market (as we have one up north at the mall too), but when all the promotion places specifically say downtown farmer's market, that would be them.

I went to their winter cookie walk, where you fill a container (that turns out to be not very big) of cookies for $15.00, that was a huge disappointment as well, between the cookies not tasting very good, and the fact that even by picking up one of each cookie, I still had to buy 2 containers to get them all to fit (and the cookies weren't that big), it was very disappointing. I've gotten some weird looks and been ignored when I've gone there too, so I'm going to have to stop going there.

I love helping local businesses, but when people are rude, or don't follow through on things they signed up to do, I don't find them to be very good businesses (whether they're big or small). Enough of my rant, check out Debbie's blog for more garage salen.

Garage sale finds.

Some of my garage sale finds this week:
The book was 25 cents, the set of silver coasters was $5.00, the little glass jar was 10 cents, the white scarf was $1.00, and the little orange pouch was 5 cents. I think I'm going to use the scarf in some kind of fabric collage.

The "diet award" was 75 cents, I'm planning on painting over it and using it for a collage background. The square thing was labeled as a lamp finial and was 25 cents, not quite sure what I'll be doing with that, but it is pretty cool looking. Below that is a box that was $1.00, and two heart pins for 25 cents each.

The blue doily was 25 cents, the bunch of flowers was $1.00, the square doily was 25 cents, the handkerchief was 25 cents and the green glass was $2.00.

Pretty Cool Treasures

Last weekend, I went up to our condo on Lake Okoboji (north Iowa). We went to a couple antique malls and I got some great stuff. At one place I found this photo book:
I has around 50 of these vellum like envelopes, they looked a lot like the envelopes people collect stamps in. Anyways, it looked like it was an Army (?) guy's photo book with lots of photos of (I'm guessing) his wife, her family, and his kid from 1944.

Here's the back of it. It says Wayne Solmonson (37078554) Co. "A" 43rd Engr. Const. Bn.

Here's the front of it. It says Barberton Film Album, and then handwritten on the right edge Wayne Solmonson Co "A" 43rd Engr. C.B. My aunt, cousin and I who went on our mini vacation decided it must have been in some old box of photos someone didn't want. We decided Wayne's child must not be alive now, because there are photos of him at 6 1/2 months in 1944, so he'd be in his 60's now. I got the whole album for about $6.00

I bought this cute little tea cup that's about an inch tall for $1.00, and that tiny little tin, that's about the size of a nickel for $1.00

I also bought a bunch of handkerchiefs. I really do love them, that yellow one is just plain, so I'm thinking about doing my own embroidery on it. The green one, is very sheer and very lightweight, the picture on it, is painted and looks like a pagoda. They were all about $1.00 each.

I also got all these photos for $2.25. I was just mentioning not so long ago, how I could never find old photos for good prices around here, then I find this stack of photos and the photo album above. I don't know what I'm going to do with them, I always think it's pretty cool to have a little peek into someone else's life.

New finds this week

OK, I'm linking to Debbiedoos Garage Salen party #12 today, I figured I should have done this a long time ago, as I've been going to garage sales all summer. And I might have some more purchases to show, that I guess will have to be linked to next weeks party, as I'm going up north for the weekend, I'll talk about that in a later post tonight.
Today, mom and I went to a church sale, only sale in my neighborhood today, there's one tomorrow I hope I can check out before I head out of town.
This is from an Uncle Wiggly's board game, and after I got the box with the pieces home I realized the game board was there separate and I should have bought it, but I honestly have no idea what I would have done with it. Above are some cards and people pieces from the box. I got the whole box shown below for 25 cents, everything at this sale that wasn't priced was a quarter. Of course, while I was there, there was a lady going around looking at stuff and then pricing it if it wasn't priced, I thought that kinda defeated the quarter thing.

Here's looking at the box for Uncle Wiggly's game pieces. You can see dice, some plastic pieces, the robin's egg blue and cream pieces are wooden, and that sparkly looking blue piece is a button. I would have paid a quarter just for the button. I never knew there was a game, but I do remember my brother having a book about Uncle Wiggly, who was a smart rabbit.

And here are the other items I bought. Those cute gloves are knitted or crocheted, they are kids gloves, but looked like the little white gloves people used to wear all the time, they were $.25. The tiny little Santa figurine was $.25, I'm going to give it to my mom for Christmas, providing I don't lose it before then. The silver bowl, that measures about 3.5" across was $1.00, I seem to be getting a tiny collection of silver stuff, so I'm posting a Silver Sunday post this week, that I'll post right after this one, so check it out. The rubber brayer at the top was $.75, I've been wanting one for awhile, so that was a good deal. And the doily was $1.00 as well, I love crocheted doilies, they're so fun to collect.

So my full haul was $3.50, pretty good deal for those cute items.
